Scrap gold is any gold you’d sell for its metal: snapped chains, single earrings, bent rings, dental gold, old class rings, mismatched pieces at the bottom of a drawer. Damage doesn’t change the metal, so broken gold is worth exactly what its gold is worth. At Benadato we weigh and test every piece in front of you, price it on today’s spot price and pay you the same day you accept.

What Counts as Scrap Gold

  • Broken chains, necklaces and bracelets
  • Single earrings, posts and backs
  • Bent, cracked or outgrown rings
  • Class rings and old wedding bands
  • Dental gold, crowns and bridges
  • Gold-filled pieces
  • Watch cases, clasps and small gold parts

Before you treat something as scrap, let us look at it. A piece that looks worn out to you may still be resalable as jewelry, and that can earn more than melt. We’ll tell you which is which.

How Scrap Gold Is Priced

1. Sorting by Karat

Mixed lots are sorted first. 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K and 24K are tested separately with professional equipment, while you watch, because stamps can be worn or wrong. 10K is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.5%, 18K is 75%, 22K is 91.7% and 24K is 99.9%.

2. Weighing

Each karat group is weighed in grams on a calibrated scale. Weight times purity gives the pure gold you’re selling.

3. Today’s Spot Price

The pure gold is priced on the live market rate. We show you the current spot price during your visit so you can check the math yourself.

4. Stones Priced Separately

Diamonds and gemstones in scrap pieces aren’t thrown in for free. Michael Nedler, our GIA accredited since 1981, grades them and they get their own line on the offer.

How Much Does Scrap Gold Sell For?

If an item isn’t resalable, we pay 67% to 95% of melt value, depending on the weight and nature of the piece. Here is a simplified example for a mixed bag:

Group Weight Pure gold
10K pieces 12 grams 5.0 grams
14K pieces 20 grams 11.7 grams
18K pieces 6 grams 4.5 grams

Add up the pure gold, multiply by the spot price per gram, and you have the melt value of the lot. The current price per gram for each karat is on our sell your gold page. For a step-by-step guide, read how much is my gold worth.

Dental Gold and Gold-Filled Pieces

It’s almost impossible to tell the gold content of dental gold by testing, so we pay the maximum after the gold is refined. Gold-filled pieces contain more gold than plated ones, and for those we can also pay after refining, so you receive the true gold value. Gold-plated jewelry has only a thin surface layer of gold and usually has little value.

How to Sell Scrap Gold Without Getting Ripped Off

  • Work with someone who knows jewelry. Buyers who only melt gold don’t know the real value of a resalable piece.
  • Watch the scale and the test. If you can’t see either, keep shopping.
  • Ask for grams and karats on paper. Each group should have its own line.
  • Be careful with mail-in envelopes. Your gold is gone before you see an offer, and stones are often ignored.
  • Bring other offers. Show us any written offer and we’ll do our best to beat it.

Scrap Gold FAQs

How much does scrap gold sell for?

If an item isn’t resalable, we pay 67% to 95% of its melt value, depending on the weight and nature of the piece. Melt value is weight, times purity, times today’s spot price.

Who pays the most for scrap gold?

Usually a buyer who tests and weighs in front of you, prices on the live spot price and checks whether any pieces are worth more as jewelry. Pawn shops and kiosks tend to pay less.

Do I need to separate my gold by karat?

No. Bring it all in one bag. We sort and test it in front of you.

Do you buy dental gold?

Yes. It’s almost impossible to tell the gold content of dental gold, so we pay the maximum after the gold is refined.

Is a small amount of gold worth selling?

Yes. We buy everything from a single earring to investment-grade bullion. For sterling silver, we buy items with a minimum weight of 500 grams (about 1.1 pounds).
