Gold chains are usually sold for their weight, which makes them simple to price and easy to underpay. A heavy rope or Cuban link can hold more gold than a drawer full of rings. At Benadato we weigh and test your chain in front of you, price it on today’s spot price and show you the math. If you accept, you’re paid the same day, in Denver or by insured mail.

How a Gold Chain Is Priced

Three numbers do most of the work: karat, weight and the day’s gold price. A few other details can move the offer up or down.

Karat

The stamp is usually on the clasp or on a small tag near it. 10K, 14K and 18K, or 417, 585 and 750, are solid gold. GF, GP or HGE mean gold-filled or plated. We test every chain with professional equipment while you watch, because clasps are sometimes replaced and a gold clasp can sit on a chain that isn’t.

Weight

Chains are weighed in grams on a calibrated scale. Weight times purity gives the pure gold content. Two chains that look alike can differ a lot here: a hollow chain is light for its size, while a solid chain of the same width can weigh several times more.

Today’s Spot Price

Pure gold is priced on the live market rate. We show you the current spot price during your visit, so you can check the calculation yourself.

Maker and Condition

Most chains are sold for their gold. A signed chain from a house like Cartier, Tiffany & Co. or David Yurman can be valued as jewelry and earn more than melt. A broken chain, a knotted chain or a chain with a missing clasp is worth what its gold is worth. There’s no need to repair it first.

Gold Chains We Buy

  • Rope, Cuban, Figaro, box, curb, wheat and herringbone chains
  • Men’s chains and heavy link chains
  • Thin everyday chains, including ones from a pendant
  • Broken, tangled or knotted chains
  • Gold anklets and body chains
  • Platinum chains, priced on the live platinum market

If your chain carries a pendant, a locket or stones, our page on how to sell a gold necklace explains how the rest of the piece is valued.

What Is a Gold Chain Worth?

Here’s a simplified example for a 20-gram 14K chain:

Step Example
Weight of the chain 20 grams
Karat 14K (58.5% gold)
Pure gold content 11.7 grams
Brand value, if signed Priced separately

Multiply the pure gold content by the spot price per gram and you have the melt value. If a chain isn’t resalable, we pay 67% to 95% of melt value, depending on the weight and nature of the piece. The current price for every karat is on our sell your gold page, and how much is my gold worth walks you through estimating it at home.

Before You Sell a Gold Chain

  • Don’t untangle a fine chain by force. A knot doesn’t change the weight, and pulling can snap it. Bring it as it is.
  • Check the clasp stamp. It’s the quickest clue to the karat, though we test it either way.
  • Watch the scale. A buyer you can trust weighs your chain in front of you, in grams.
  • Bring other offers. Show us any written offer and we’ll do our best to beat it.

We also buy gold rings, gold bracelets, gold earrings and scrap gold, all priced the same way.

Gold Chain Selling FAQs

What is the best way to sell a gold chain?

Take it to a buyer who weighs and tests it in front of you and prices it on today’s spot price. Ask for the weight, the karat and the price per gram in writing.

How much will I get for a 14K gold chain?

14K is 58.5% gold. Multiply the chain’s weight in grams by 0.585, then by the spot price per gram, to get the melt value. Your offer is calculated from that number.

Do you buy broken gold chains?

Yes. Broken chains are priced by weight and purity, exactly like an intact one.

Is a hollow chain worth less?

Per gram, no. Per chain, usually yes, because a hollow chain holds less gold than a solid chain of the same size.

Can I sell a gold chain with a pendant on it?

Yes. We price the chain and the pendant together, and any stones in the pendant are graded separately.
