Understanding Gold Karats
The karat tells us how much of your piece is pure gold. Higher karat means more gold content — and a higher offer per gram. Here’s what the numbers mean, and how to find yours.
| Karat | Gold Purity | Hallmark Stamp | Most Common In |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10K | 41.7% gold | 417 | Everyday American jewelry, fashion pieces |
| 14K | 58.3% gold | 585 | Most US engagement rings and fine jewelry |
| 18K | 75.0% gold | 750 | European fine jewelry, luxury pieces |
| 22K | 91.7% gold | 916 | Indian and Middle Eastern jewelry |
| 24K | 99.9% gold | 999 | Bullion coins, gold bars, investment-grade gold |
How It Works
Selling your gold shouldn’t be complicated. Here’s exactly what to expect from start to payment.
- Bring your gold in — or ship it securely
Visit our Denver office — walk-ins are welcome, though calling ahead lets us give your pieces dedicated time without a wait. If you’re outside Colorado, we have a secure, insured mail-in process used by clients from every state. Contact us first so we can walk you through it before you ship anything.
- We test, weigh, and explain everything
We test the purity of each piece and weigh it precisely. Then we show you three numbers: the confirmed karat, the weight in grams, and the current live spot price of gold. We multiply them together in front of you. That calculation is the basis of your offer — there’s nothing behind it that we don’t show you.
- You decide — with no pressure and no deadline
Accept the offer and you leave with payment the same day — cash, check, or bank transfer, your choice. If you’d like time to think or get a second opinion, that’s completely fine. No pressure, no expiring offer, no hard feelings. We’ve had clients come back months later and the process was exactly the same.
How We Price Your Gold
Three factors determine every offer we make on gold. We walk you through all three before asking you to decide anything.
1. The live spot price of gold
Gold is a commodity traded on international markets. The spot price updates throughout the day. We use the current market rate — not a fixed internal price — as the starting point for every offer. Gold is currently trading at historically high levels, which means this is an unusually good time to sell.
2. Karat purity
We test each piece with professional equipment to confirm its actual gold content. A 14K piece is 58.3% gold; an 18K piece is 75%. We don’t estimate — we verify, and we show you the result.
3. Weight
We weigh each piece on a calibrated scale, in grams, in front of you. The formula is simple: spot price × purity × weight. That’s your offer. No hidden deductions, no arbitrary percentages we don’t explain.
One thing worth understanding: retail appraisals are not resale prices. An appraisal is designed for insurance replacement — it reflects what a store would charge to replace your piece, which is typically much higher than what any buyer will pay. If you’ve had your gold appraised and our offer is lower than that number, we’ll explain why, clearly and without making you feel bad for asking.

How do you calculate what my gold is worth?
Three factors: the current live spot price of gold, your piece’s confirmed karat purity, and its exact weight in grams. We multiply them and show you the result before making an offer. The formula is: spot price × purity percentage × weight in grams.
Does broken or damaged gold still have value?
Yes — fully. A broken chain and a pristine chain of the same karat and weight are worth the same amount to us. We’re buying the gold content, not the aesthetics. Bring in whatever you have, regardless of condition.
How do I find out what karat my gold is?
Look for a stamped hallmark — typically inside a ring band or on a necklace clasp. Common markings: 417 (10K), 585 (14K), 750 (18K), 916 (22K), 999 (24K). If there’s no marking or you’re not sure, bring the piece in — we test it on-site with professional equipment, at no charge.
Is your offer binding? Can I walk away?
Before you accept in writing, you are under no obligation whatsoever. Take the offer, decline it, or ask for a day to think it over. No pressure, no expiring deadlines. We’ve had clients return months later and the process was exactly the same.
My appraisal says my gold is worth much more. Why is your offer lower?
Retail appraisals are written for insurance replacement — they reflect what a store would charge to replace your piece, not what the secondary market will pay. The difference is real and consistent across the industry. When you come in, we’ll walk through it clearly so you understand where the numbers come from.
Do you buy gold-plated or gold-filled jewelry?
No. Gold-plated and gold-filled pieces contain too little gold by weight to make us a fair buyer. We buy solid gold items — 10K minimum. If you’re not certain whether your piece qualifies, bring it in and we’ll test it on the spot and tell you honestly.
Can I sell just one piece?
Yes. There’s no minimum — one ring, one broken chain, one coin. Each item is evaluated on its own merits and priced individually.
Do you work with sellers outside of Denver?
Yes. We have a secure, insured mail-in process used by clients from every US state. Contact us before shipping anything — we’ll explain the steps and discuss appropriate insurance for your shipment. Do not ship without speaking with us first.
