A GIA report is the most trusted document in the diamond trade, and for a natural diamond it usually earns the strongest offer. It doesn’t set the price on its own, though. At Benadato, Michael Nedler, our GIA accredited since 1981, checks your diamond against its report in a private Denver office, with a Sarin scan when needed. You see how every part of the offer is worked out, and if you accept, you’re paid the same day.
Why a GIA Report Matters When You Sell
The Gemological Institute of America grades diamonds to a single, strict standard. A buyer who trusts the report can price your stone with confidence, which is why GIA-graded natural diamonds hold their value better than uncertified stones or stones graded by less consistent labs. For a full comparison, read certified vs uncertified diamonds.
What the report does is describe the stone. What it doesn’t do is tell you what a buyer will pay today. Two diamonds with identical grades can sell for different amounts depending on how they look, how they’re cut and what the market is asking for.
How We Evaluate a GIA Certified Diamond
1. We Verify the Report
Every GIA report has a number, and most GIA-graded diamonds carry the same number laser-inscribed on the girdle. We match the stone to its report before anything else. You can check your own report online before you visit: our guide to the GIA report check shows how.
2. We Grade the Stone Ourselves
Michael Nedler and Yossi Ben Adato look at the diamond in person, with a Sarin scan when needed. With any lab we verify the grading ourselves, and our offer reflects what we see.
3. We Price the 4Cs Against Today’s Market
Carat, cut, color and clarity make up most of the value. A single step in color or clarity can move the offer more than most people expect. For a refresher, see the 4Cs explained.
4. We Price the Setting and the Brand Separately
If your diamond is set, the platinum or gold is weighed and tested, and side stones add value. Rings from houses like Tiffany & Co. and Cartier can be worth more than their materials when they’re authentic.
What Is a GIA Diamond Worth?
Expect less than the price on the original receipt. Retail prices include the jeweler’s markup, marketing and store costs, and none of that carries over when a diamond is resold. We’ll be straight with you: natural diamonds under 1.5 carats have lost a lot of resale value since lab-grown diamonds entered the market, while larger, well-certified stones hold their value far better. These recent purchases show the range:
| Natural diamond | What we paid |
| 1.5 ct cushion | $2,500 |
| 2.5 ct radiant | $20,000 |
| 3 ct round | $17,000 |
Examples from September 2026. Every stone is different. The fastest way to know what yours is worth is a free evaluation.

How to Sell Your GIA Diamond
- Send the report number or book a visit. Use the form on this page, call +1-888-625-0232, or book a private appointment at our office at 100 Fillmore St, Denver.
- A professional appraisal, in front of you. One-on-one, in a private office. Your diamond doesn’t leave your sight, and you get an itemized offer, explained line by line.
- Accept and get paid today. If you accept, you’re paid the same day, by wire, Zelle, Venmo, check or cash.
Most appointments take 30 to 60 minutes. Not in Denver? We buy from anywhere in the world. Contact us for a shipping manifest and an insured FedEx label. Once the package arrives, we call you with an offer within 1 to 2 business days and pay the same day you accept. See how to ship your items safely.
Before You Sell a GIA Certified Diamond
- Keep the original report. Bring the original copy, not a printout.
- Keep the stone in perfect condition. Diamonds can chip, and repolishing is expensive, takes time and requires regrading by GIA.
- Know what’s in demand. Low clarity grades such as I2 are a hard sell, and fashion moves demand between shapes.
- Don’t remove the stone from its setting. Bring the piece as it is.
- Ask for the reasoning. If you only get a number with no explanation, keep shopping. Bring any written offer and we’ll do our best to beat it.
Selling a diamond without a report? We buy those too. See sell loose diamonds, where to sell a diamond ring or our main sell diamonds page.

Incredibly professional and knowledge. Great experience all around!
I had a wonderful experience at Benadato Trading Co. Yossi was friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable. Previously, I took some jewelry to a jewelry store and received a bid. I gave Yossi the same items, and his bid was higher, thus demonstrating his honesty. Not only did I feel comfortable the entire time I was there, It was an enjoyable and memorable experience. Highest rating.
Absolutely phenomenal service. The entire process was professional to a degree that you feel when you are shopping in couture stores. Yossi and his staff all introduced themselves, I felt comfortable, respected, and the offer was beyond what I even expected to receive. Tip: go to the elevator inside and go to the 5th floor!
GIA Diamond Selling FAQs
Are GIA certified diamonds worth more when you sell?
For natural diamonds, a GIA report usually earns the strongest offer, because it’s the industry’s most trusted standard. The grades still need to match the stone, which is why we verify every one.
Do you buy diamonds with IGI or other certificates?
Yes. We buy diamonds with any certificate, or none at all. With any lab, we verify the grading ourselves and our offer reflects what we see.
What if I lost my GIA report?
A lost report doesn’t stop a sale. If the stone has a laser inscription, the report can often be found by its number. If not, Michael Nedler grades the diamond during your visit.
Do you buy GIA colored diamonds?
Yes. Fancy colored diamonds are one of our specialties, and a GIA colored diamond report makes a big difference. See pink diamond buyers and black diamond buyers.
How do I get paid?
The same day you accept, by wire, Zelle, Venmo, check or cash. There’s no limit: we’ve paid from a few hundred dollars to seven figures for the right piece.
